The trek begins at dawn, the early morning mist clinging to the mountains, giving the jungle an almost otherworldly feel. As we start our ascent, the landscape quickly transforms. In Rwanda, the dramatic, rolling hills seem to stretch endlessly. The trail is not always clear—it’s often overgrown with thick vegetation, requiring us to push our way through vines and leaves, making the trek feel even more like an exploration into uncharted territory.
In Uganda, Bwindi Impenetrable Forest earns its name quickly. The terrain is steeper, with narrow paths that wind through towering trees. The canopy above filters the sunlight, casting eerie, dappled shadows on the ground below. The humidity wraps around you, and every step feels like a deeper immersion into nature’s untouched core. Every now and then, the silence is broken by the calls of monkeys or the distant roar of a waterfall, reminding you of the wildness that surrounds you.
The physical challenge is real—muddy trails, uneven ground, and the altitude all make each step a test of endurance. But there’s a reward in the struggle, a sense that every bead of sweat brings you closer to something truly extraordinary. The guides, experienced trackers with an incredible knowledge of the forest, keep us motivated, stopping occasionally to point out the tracks or nests the gorillas have left behind.
