Unwinding by the Shores: Lake Kivu Itinerary

After days of trekking through dense forests and coming face-to-face with gorillas, Lake Kivu offers the perfect retreat for a more leisurely adventure. The calm waters, picturesque shorelines, and relaxing ambiance make it an ideal spot to relax and reflect on the unforgettable trekking experiences.

Day 1: Arrival at Lake Kivu (Gisenyi or Kibuye)
Arrive in either Gisenyi or Kibuye, two of the most popular towns along the lake. Depending on your starting point after the gorilla trek (Volcanoes National Park for Gisenyi or Nyungwe Forest for Kibuye), settle into your lakeside hotel and spend the afternoon relaxing.

  • Morning: Drive from your trekking location to Lake Kivu.
  • Afternoon: Upon arrival, take some time to enjoy the calm surroundings. Gisenyi has beautiful beaches where you can walk along the shores, while Kibuye offers a more secluded and scenic escape.
  • Evening: Enjoy a peaceful dinner at a lakeside restaurant, where you can watch the sunset over the lake while sipping on local Rwandan tea or coffee.

Day 2: Exploring the Lake
Lake Kivu is more than just a picturesque spot—there are plenty of activities to enjoy that still keep you close to nature.

  • Morning: Take a boat trip on the lake. A cruise on the calm waters will give you stunning views of the green hills surrounding the lake. If you’re interested, ask your guide to stop by Napoleon Island, a peaceful spot home to colonies of fruit bats.
  • Afternoon: After the boat ride, explore the town of Gisenyi, where you can visit the hot springs or check out the local markets and shops. In Kibuye, you can visit Amahoro Island, nicknamed “Peace Island,” for a quiet afternoon picnic and hike around the small island.
  • Evening: Dine at a local restaurant by the lake, savoring some fresh fish caught from Lake Kivu, and enjoy the cool breeze as the stars reflect on the water’s surface.

Day 3: Adventure or Relaxation
You can choose to spend this day as relaxed or adventurous as you like, depending on your energy levels.

  • Option 1 (Relaxation): Start with a leisurely breakfast, then head out for a kayaking session on the lake. Paddle at your own pace, exploring the serene shores and taking in the beauty of the hills and coffee plantations in the distance. Afterward, find a quiet beach or hotel pool where you can read, nap, or simply enjoy the tranquility.
  • Option 2 (Adventure): For those with some energy left, try hiking or biking along the Congo-Nile Trail. This scenic route hugs the shores of the lake and winds through coffee plantations, local villages, and lush landscapes. The trail can be done in sections, so you can choose a shorter hike or bike ride that fits your pace.

Day 4: Departure
After a peaceful time at Lake Kivu, it’s time to bid farewell and head toward your next destination.

  • Morning: Enjoy your final breakfast by the lake and soak in the last views of the beautiful surroundings. Depending on your itinerary, you could depart for Kigali (around a 3-hour drive) or continue to your next destination in Rwanda or Uganda.

The Journey into the Jungle: Trekking Through Rwanda and Uganda’s Wilds

Begin with a thrilling hook, setting the stage for your adventure into the heart of Africa, where the dense jungles of Rwanda and Uganda offer encounters with one of the most awe-inspiring creatures on the planet—the mountain gorillas.

“Imagine standing at the edge of an ancient forest, the air thick with mystery, when suddenly you lock eyes with a silverback gorilla—a moment so raw and powerful, it stays with you forever. Welcome to gorilla trekking in the mist-covered mountains of Rwanda and Uganda.”Africa, but of the world. Trekking through Rwanda and Uganda is more than an adventure; it’s a call to protect, preserve, and cherish the wild.”

The trek begins at dawn, the early morning mist clinging to the mountains, giving the jungle an almost otherworldly feel. Our group gathers at the park headquarters, a mix of excitement and nerves palpable in the air. Armed with hiking boots, walking sticks, and a sense of anticipation, we venture into the heart of the wilderness.

As we start our ascent, the landscape quickly transforms. In Rwanda, the dramatic, rolling hills seem to stretch endlessly. The dense forest comes alive with the songs of exotic birds, and if you listen closely, you might hear the distant rustling of animals moving through the undergrowth. The trail is not always clear—it’s often overgrown with thick vegetation, requiring us to push our way through vines and leaves, making the trek feel even more like an exploration into uncharted territory.

In Uganda, Bwindi Impenetrable Forest earns its name quickly. The terrain is steeper, with narrow paths that wind through towering trees. The canopy above filters the sunlight, casting eerie, dappled shadows on the ground below. The humidity wraps around you, and every step feels like a deeper immersion into nature’s untouched core. Every now and then, the silence is broken by the calls of monkeys or the distant roar of a waterfall, reminding you of the wildness that surrounds you.

The physical challenge is real—muddy trails, uneven ground, and the altitude all make each step a test of endurance. But there’s a reward in the struggle, a sense that every bead of sweat brings you closer to something truly extraordinary. The guides, experienced trackers with an incredible knowledge of the forest, keep us motivated, stopping occasionally to point out the tracks or nests the gorillas have left behind.

As we climb higher, the sounds of the jungle shift. The faint rustling of leaves grows louder, and our guide motions for silence. The moment is close. The anticipation builds as we inch forward, breath held, every sense on high alert. Suddenly, the thick foliage parts—and there they are.

A family of gorillas, resting in a small clearing, unaware of the awe they inspire in us. The silverback is magnificent, a living monument of power and grace. The younger gorillas tumble and play, their carefree energy contrasting with the careful vigilance of the adults. The forest, which just moments ago felt wild and intimidating, now feels like the perfect stage for these incredible creatures.
